The Advocate has published a special 45th anniversary issue, and pro footballer Dave Kopay is one of the heroes honored by the magazine. Kopay played professional football 1964-1972 for the San Francisco 49ers, the Detroit Lions (photos left and below), the Washington Redskins and the Green Bay Packers.

Kopay came out as a gay man three years after his retirement from the NFL and published a memoir in 1977 – The David Kopay Story. He lives in Los Angeles today and has become a Gay Games Ambassador for the Federation of Gay Games. He was a featured announcer at the opening ceremonies of Gay Games VII in Chicago (2006). Dave Kopay is 69 years old. How time flies!
